The Monkey & Bird Garden has been an attraction at the Park since the 1980s and requires refreshing in order to provide the high quality facilities/attractions required by the Park's guests. Chesslngton World of Adventures therefore seek full planning permission for the redevelopment and re-theming of the Monkey & Bird Garden. A number of the animal houses and enclosures will be reused and re-themed and the following new development is proposed:
Erection of a new monkey-themed entrance feature (approximately 6.5m height, similar height to the existing monorail) with a themed animal containment portal (12sqm) to the rear of the entrance
A netting elevated to a (maximum height 71m AOD) across the entire soui:h east section of the application site to create a ‘free flight’ aviary experience (see Site Plan as Proposed Ref: 263/35-4)
Erection of a new themed wall to the north of the existing pond in keeping with the existing Rockwork
Erection of a new hub structure (approximately 7.5m in height) in the centre of the attraction (replacing the pigmy marmoset enclosure), adjacent to the existing bird enclosure, with the monkey-themed animal containment portal at the southern end of the hub (12sqm). The themed hub structure will have a rough thatched woven roof and a raised viewing platform at 4m high, accessed via steps on the western elevation of the structure. The hub structure provides a link to the proposed spider monkey enclosure, within the northern end of the site.
Erection of elevated adventure walkways supported by lookout towers with a maximum height of 6m, and support towers with a maximum height of 8m. Access to the walkways will be provided via the first floor platform of the hub. The walkways will allow guests to experience the monkeys from an elevated position, providing a new and unique experience for the Park. The specific design of the walkways between the towers is yet to be designed in detail, but it is suggested that should the Council required additional details this could be provided by way of a planning condition.
Creation of a grassed open spider monkey enclosure with a glazed perimeter (approximately 2.5m), including a low level themed structures and interlocking timber climbing elements for the monkeys (maximum height 8m). The walkways within the enclosure will provide an interactive experience with the animals.
Erection of a new themed monkey house (below 6m) in the north east of the site, connected to the hub structure via the elevated walkways. The house will be erected adjacent to an existing animal enclosure. The ground floor of the monkey house will provide a sheltered area for the animals. A viewing platform and glazed panel at first floor level will allow guests further opportunity to view the animals from above.
Erection of a new monkey-themed entrance feature at the northern entrance/exit (approximately 6m) and installation of a new seating area to the south within the centre of the attraction.
Re-theming of the squirrel monkey walkthrough to be in keeping with the proposed redevelopment. A new themed animal portal is proposed at the north east of this enclosure (16sqm).
