LAS VEGAS -- A new 26-acre waterpark is making a splash in Las Vegas, creating jobs and boosting the bottom line for businesses. Clark County Commissioners unanimously voted for the park and aquatics center, saying they are a few months away from a groundbreaking.
The park will be built near Fort Apache and Warm Springs. The county expects about 400 jobs -- 200 to build the facilities and 200 to operate them. Businesses in the area excited about being flooded with more customers.
"Right now it's ok, but I think it's going to be more customers," said Pia Taing with Benjarong Thai Restaurant.
Not far from the restaurant Taing manages is Raw Health, where the owner Robin Shaw is thinking about the health of the community.
"There's just a lot of vacancies, a lot of empty resident spots, lot of empty commercial spots. So by bringing this project over here, it might make certain people aware of this and say, 'Hey, maybe I should move here or I'll start doing some business here,'" she said.
"We plan on moving forward, they plan on moving forward and it was a seven to zero vote," said County Commissioner Susan Brager. "It's going to be in the southwest section of our community, great access to freeways, people seeing what's out there. Wet n' Wild was over the top and that's how this is going to be, along with that aquatics center and a park in the very front of it."
The Howard Hughes Company, who is supporting the project, has several other parks in Texas called Hawaiian Falls. Owners say they want to keep the name of this park a secret until the groundbreaking, but it's no secret they will be open for business Memorial Day of 2012.

Starting next year a major water park will once again serve Las Vegas, only this time it won't be near the Strip, and will be aimed at attracting local residents.

Splash Canyon Water Park has a planned Memorial Day 2012 opening date. The new 25 acre facility will be located in Southwest Las Vegas, and eventually could expand to 40 acres. Splash Canyon will be a part of a larger community park area, which could include an aquatics center as well.

Splash Canyon will feature many popular water park attractions in its $18 million first Phase. A layout of the park has been released:

Many Las Vegas residents have wanted a new water park since Wet 'n Wild closed in 2004, leaving the area without a traditional park. Splash Canyon will feature some 20 slides and attractions when it opens, including a 17,000 square foot wave pool, seven story speed and mat racer slides, children's play area, lazy river, water play fortress, and more.

The park will be managed by Harvest Family Entertainment, the same company that runs the successful Hawaiian Falls chain of water parks in Texas. Depending on the success of Splash Canyon, other parks for the Las Vegas area are being eyed.

Das Projekt verzögert sich wohl um ein Jahr, man wird also erst 2013 eröffnen...

Plans of Opening Splash Canyon this Summer Down the Drain

splashlv_redtape-610x406.jpg

Las Vegans will have to wait another year before they can once again enjoy a water theme park close to home. Splash Canyon, the much anticipated water theme park, will not be opening in May of 2012 as originally planned, according to a Splash Canyon executive. Red tape caused a delay in getting construction started on the $18-million park. Splash Canyon is located at Fort Apache and Warm Springs roads and plans call for a 25-acre park with a 15-acre expansion planned for the future, bringing the total size to 40 acres. Sales were already underway for season tickets this year at the introductory rate of $99 per person. As of this afternoon, the Splash Canyon website has been taken offline.
Another developer is planning a 22-acre water park for Henderson near Gibson and Galleria roads. Vegas Residential LLC is still securing financing for the proposed project.
The last water theme park operating in Las Vegas was Wet and Wild. Located on Las Vegas Blvd. near Sahara Avenue. That park closed when it’s lease expired in 2004. Landowners were to build a mega-resort there but that project never got off the ground.
