China unveils world's highest Ferris wheel on 450m tall skyscraper

Canton Tower in China is now home to a Ferris wheel attraction with see-through pods, giving riders a panoramic view of the city from 450 metres up.

Imagine a big wheel being put on its side and placed on top of a skyscraper.
That is pretty much what has happened at the Canton Tower in China – home to the latest in attractions that are not for the faint-hearted.

The ride, which opens this week, consists of 16 see-through pods that travel round an elliptical track.

Each capsule holds six people and is made from a macromolecule material that allows a clear 360-degree view from the top of the tower – 450m (1,480ft) up.

The ride lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. It was built to withstand earthquakes and powerful storms, should there be any mishaps on the way.
The attraction in Guangzhou, capital of the southwestern Chinese province of Guangdong, more than matches the world’s tallest Ferris wheel in terms of high-up experiences.

That attraction – the Singapore Flyer – is 165m tall but could soon be overtaken by the Las Vegas High Roller, which will be about 10m taller.
The Roller will have 32 cabins, each holding 40 people. It is expected to open in 2013.

The project is expected to boost visitor numbers to Las Vegas, which has been affected badly by the downturn.

All of these attractions make our very own London Eye – a mere 135m tall – seem a bit small fry.
